As we can see from the spelling, the origin of the name is Hacksteak, a ground meat steak eaten in the northern part of Germany including Hamburg[ˈhambʊʁk]. It became known when German immigrants came to the US in the 19th century. In the United States, this ground meat steak was put between two round buns and improved into a sandwich: the origin of a hamburger.
